Despite so many streaming services and subscriptions available, you can still find a lot of value through the purchase of used Blu-Ray and DVD discs. The purchase of used discs can come with discounts separate from retail. As you shop for the used options at a pawn shop, there are four things to look for before making your final purchase.
When you know what to look for, you can get the most out of your purchase and build up your home media collection.
1. Multi-Format OptionsAs you shop for Blu-Rays and DVDs, check out the Blu-Ray section first. Many Blu-Ray releases will come with a DVD disc included in the same case. The multiple formats give you plenty of options. You could gift the extra disc to someone else or reserve it for televisions in your home that only have a DVD player as opposed to a Blu-Ray player.
Some Blu-Ray discs may include a 4K disc as well. Even if you don't have a 4K player, the discs are good to save for the future. You never know when you will own a 4K player. A used Blu-Ray seller like a pawn shop may even have a 4K disc player for sale. Keep your options open and really focus on the formats you purchase.
2. Digital Copies & Rewards InsertsAlong with extra discs, you should open used Blu-Ray and DVD cases to look for any paper inserts. A lot of movies include digital copy codes. When you own a digital copy of the movie, you can watch the movie on multiple services. Access the digital version on devices like laptops, tablets, and phones.
Digital copies are redeemed through multiple services and you can ask a worker if you can verify the digital copy before making your purchase. The paper inserts found in movies may also include reward codes. Companies like Universal, Sony, and Disney have reward programs specifically made for movie purchases.
If you purchase used movies with the inserts, you can build up reward points and can use the points to get rewards like digital movies.
3. Bonus FeaturesOne of the main benefits associated with Blu-Ray and DVD releases is the bonus features that come with the movie. Often, streaming movies do not have the same bonus features. Check the back of a movie case to see the bonus features. Features may include the director's commentary, deleted scenes, or bonus short movies.
The extras are sometimes worth the full value of the purchase itself. In some cases, you could find alternative versions of the movie, including director's cut or special edits made for television. If movies had spin-offs or cartoon adaptations, some releases may include extra episodes as a bonus.
4. Complete Show SeasonsWhen you purchased used discs, some of your best bargains come in the form of complete seasons of TV shows.
Owning a full season of a TV show comes with many benefits and you do not have to worry about losing your favorite show on streaming services. Due to changes in music rights or edits controlled by production companies, streaming services could change shows or completely eliminate episodes. Many shows jump from service to service, forcing you into new subscriptions if you want to keep watching.
With a Blu-Ray purchase, you will get the complete season, typically in the way the show was originally broadcasted. As with movies, you may find inserts to redeem digital copies of the TV shows as well.
