If you plan to pawn your gold or silver jewelry, a cleanup is not required. But, cleaning gives potential buyers a better impression and potentially earns a higher value. In addition, various materials require specific sanitation methods. The good part is that you do not need to buy expensive cleaning materials since most products are available within your home.

This blog discusses how to clean your gold or silver jewelry before you resale it to a pawnshop.

Gold Jewelry
Dirt, grime, and stains can accumulate on your gold jewelry and make it look worn out and devalued. So, clean your gold jewelry with any method below before you sell it to a pawnshop.

Ammonia Solution
Soak your jewelry in ammonia to remove grime and dirt. To do so, mix ammonia with warm water in the ratio of 1:6 and stir. Then, dip your jewelry to soak for less than a minute because ammonia can become corrosive. After that, withdraw the item and wipe it with a soft cloth to remove water. Finally, leave your jewelry to dry off completely in the air before you take it to a pawnshop.

Boiled Water
Bring to boil the amount of water you need to submerge all your jewelry. Arrange your items in a different bowl, and be careful not to place one piece on another. When the water boils, pour over your jewelry until every piece is submerged. Wait until the water cools, and then scrub each piece with a toothbrush or other soft-bristled brush. Then dab dry with a soft towel and leave in the air to dry.

Vinegar
Based on the quantity of jewelry, put white vinegar in a small or medium-sized container. Dip your pieces inside the vinegar and leave for a few minutes. When time elapses, use a soft-bristled brush to remove the sticky grim. Then, rinse your piece and wipe with a soft cotton cloth.

Silver Jewelry
Air makes silver jewelry change color with time. The new color can range from different shades of yellow to black, which is not an attractive way to present your jewelry to a pawn shop. Discover the items you can use to clean your silver jewelry and improve its appearance.

Toothpaste
Use toothpaste to remove tarnish from silver jewelry, thanks to the combination of abrasive cleaners and chemicals. Apply toothpaste with a toothbrush and then scrub off gently so you do not scratch the pieces. Next, rinse the pieces in warm water as you check the progress, and scrub again if you still notice dirt on your jewelry. When you have removed all the tarnish, do a final rinse and dry with a clean cloth.

Soap and Water
Fill a dish or bowl with warm water and mild dish soap or shampoo. Then, use the water with a soft brush to clean your jewelry. Gently scrub your items inside and outside since skin cells and hand lotion build up over time and cause grime. Next, rinse the jewelry under warm, preferably running, water. Finally, wipe with a microfiber or silver cloth.

Baking Soda and Aluminum Foil
Baking soda and aluminum foil restore a showroom shine if your silver pieces have lost luster. To do so, line a container with aluminum foil and let the shiny side face upwards. Then, pour hot water into the container, add two parts of baking soda to one part of water, and stir. Put your pieces inside the mixture and let soak for a few minutes. After that, rinse in cold water and then buff to restore shine.
